Diet
A cockatiel's diet should consist of a variety of foods to ensure they receive all the necessary nutrients for good health. A healthy diet for a cockatiel should include:
- Pellets: High-quality, commercial pellets should make up the base of a cockatiel's diet. Pellets provide a balanced mix of essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.
- Fresh Vegetables: Cockatiels should be offered a variety of fresh vegetables daily, such as dark leafy greens (kale, spinach), carrots, broccoli, and sweet potato.
- Fresh Fruit: Offer a variety of fresh fruits in moderation, such as apples, bananas, berries, and oranges.
- Grains and Seeds: Small amounts of grains and seeds can be offered as treats, but should not be the primary component of their diet.
- Clean Water: Provide fresh, clean water in a water bottle or dish, and change it daily.
- Calcium: Calcium is essential for strong bones and egg production in female cockatiels. Offer a cuttlebone, mineral block, or calcium supplement.
- Avoid: Chocolate, avocado, caffeine, alcohol, and salty or sugary foods are toxic to birds and should be avoided.
